Herbs and Spices
What's the Difference? The difference is that if a leaf of a plant can be used to add aroma flavoring to dishes, then it is an herb.
Herbs are also used for medicinal and/or spiritual purposes. The parts of the plant used include the leaves, flowers, seeds, root bark, and inner bark.
Spices are made up of every other part of the plant, including dried bark, roots, berries,
seeds, twigs, or anything else that isn't the green leafy part.
Spices, when harvested from any other portion of the plant are typically dried.
Spices come from berries (peppercorns), roots (ginger), seeds (nutmeg), and flower buds (cloves).
Some plants yield both an herb and a spice. Cilantro is the leafy herb of the same plant that gives us the popular spice coriander seed. Dill weed (an herb) and dill seed (a spice) also come from the same plant.
Many herbs have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help keep you healthy. Why not do your own research to find the healthy benefits the herbs and spices offer. You may just be surprised what Mother Nature's health store has to offer without the side effects of prescription drugs.
